Patient-Centered Care – Leaders in the field of gastroenterology from Madison Medical Affiliates in Milwaukee have come together to form the Wisconsin Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Our Center is staffed by highly trained individuals with years of experience. The team of physicians includes Dr. Vincents J. Dindzans, Dr. Drew Elgin, Dr. Srihari Ramanujam, Dr. Patrick Regan and Dr. Chad Stepke with Dr. Jeffrey W. Schenck, M.D. serving as Medical Director.
Most people have never heard of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). If you are living with IBD, you know it can be challenging, but also know that your are not alone. IBD affects more than half million Americans in the United States. A majority of people live with this chronic disease for years without getting diagnosed. Most people find out they have it during their adolescent years, although it’s not uncommon for someone to be diagnosed before or later in life. Children can have IBD when they are just a few months old. IBD can be treated with medication, diet and surgery, but at this time there is not cure. Although IBD is not always easy to live with, most people find that after some initial lifestyle modifications, they are able to adapt quite well.
Diagnosing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is complex because the symptoms vary for each individual and can be similar to other diseases. Unfortunately, there isn’t just one test that can accurately diagnose, IBD. An initial consultation at the Center will involve gathering information from multiple sources starting with medical history and conducting a physical examination. A combination of exams, lab tests and minor procedures are common such as the following, blood tests, stool sample, colonoscopy and radiologic studies.
